Important installation information
This is an internal electronic repair component, not a plug-and-play dashboard assembly. Installation requires disassembling the instrument cluster and working carefully around its circuit board and display connections.
Professional instrument-cluster repair is strongly recommended. Depending on the cluster version, specialized electronic skills, display-bonding or soldering equipment, and EEPROM adjustment may be required to obtain correct display operation. Technical guidance for Porsche 986 displays also notes that center-screen versions vary and must be identified before replacement. Porsche 986 display-identification guide.
Before ordering, open or inspect the original cluster and verify:
- The complete Porsche and VDO reference numbers
- Center-screen dimensions and connector style
- Segment versus dot-matrix display type
- MPH or km/h configuration
- Physical appearance of the original LCD and ribbon connection
Because only the display is being replaced, vehicle mileage and immobilizer information remain stored in the original cluster electronics.
